Pens Prospects v Panthers Prospects (L 2-5)

So you've probably heard that four prospect teams have been in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada for training camp this week. One of those teams is the Penguins' prospect team. Today they went up against the Florida Panthers' prospect team. Friend of The Show Luke M. was in attendance and was nice enough to send in this sweet recap of the game:

I was at the Penguins/Panthers prospect game today and I thought I might update you on how it went :)

Casey Pierro-Zabotel would score the only goal of the first period on a rebound scramble to give the Penguins the 1-0 lead. Jean-Michel Daoust and Kevin Veilleux would collect assists on the play. The first period was pretty evenly matched with the shots being 10-6 in favour of Florida and David Brown making the difference in net for Pittsburgh.


Florida began to dominate early in the second and Brown looked shakey the rest of the way through. Florida scored early on a 5 on 3 goal to make it 1-1, and the pens regained the lead on rebound goal by Dustin Jeffrey, but Florida would not lose this one. They scored a shorthanded goal [note: this was made worse by the fact that the goal and assist were by numbers 71 and 68, respectively] and then would notch another even strength goal to take a 3-2 lead to the second intermission.

The third period was all Florida, with Pittsburgh only gaining momentum when they were given their man advantage. Florida would add another tally to make it 4-2. After that, and odd play occured where the Panthers took the puck in for a 2 on 2 rush, and when one of their players were tripped in front of Brown, the refs arm went up in what seemed like an obvious call. However, the ref skated to the official scorer, and they announced "Florida has been awarded a penalty shot" the crowd kind of let out a collective "huh/what?". Dan Collins took the shot for Florida, but was stopped with a left pad save by Brown. Florida would later add another nice goal and win the game 5-2.


Standouts:
# 14: Tommy Goebel: Easily the fastest skater on the ice for either team. He made a few defenders look flat-footed on a number of occasions. He was one of the smaller players on the ice listed as a (generous) 5'8". He scored 5 points (2-3) in 5 games for Rochester of the AHL last year and will be a good addition to WB/S.

# 9: Aaron Boogaard: Got into 2 fights, clearly dominating both. At 6'3", 220 he should be a pretty good AHL enforcer.

# 8: Alex Goligoski: I know he is expected to fight for a spot right out of training camp, but he was just decent, nothing outstanding. The shorthanded goal allowed was a result of Goligoski and Boogaard having a communication breakdown. I expect the Penguins to start him in the AHL and him to have to earn a call-up.
