"It's not the biggest city, but it's a city I really like."

I've got a lot of Sid-tastic links for you today! Well, actually they came from several Friends of The Show...

I got an update from Friend of The Show Jan about the Mario Lemieux Foundation auctions for her drawings:
Just wanted to report that the bidding is over for my two drawings and I am so pleased that one brought in $200 for the foundation and the other brought in $210 for The MLF. How cool is that? Again, thank you for letting me be a part of the family of Friends of the Show! I think it's cool that the first drawing I ever did of our Captain that was featured on YOUR site went for the top price of the two.
Once again - congratulations, Jan! $410 for the MLF! I'm so proud of you! :)

Finally today, I received this e-mail from Friend of The Show Lauren a few days ago:
It was snowing at my house yesterday before I left to drive back to Ohio for class, and I should've been working on a paper, but instead I took a break to take my dog Emma and Sidney Penguin outside for a couple of pictures! :) Enjoy!
Look at how sweet Emma is:

What a pretty puppy!!! Big thanks go out to Michelle, Carlie, Stagerat, Kellie, Jan, and Lauren for their contributions to today's post. Tomorrow I'll have some amazing game day pics for you.

Friends, We've Hit $1,000!!! :)

An update on the Roaming Penguin sales courtesy of R.P. Mama Stephanie S.:
WE HAVE REACHED 200 PENGUINS!! I am sooooo excited (and a little freaked out seeing as I have over 100 to make). But this means over $1,000 will go to the MLF. I was just hoping to send $500....so this totally makes my day!! Jodie, you and The Friends of The Show are just incredible....how did I get so lucky??
WOW!!! $1,000 is a lot of freaking money! Thank you so much, everyone! To Stephanie: Take your time with them and don't get overwhelmed - we're all Friends here. We understand that these creations take time. :)

To get in on the fun, click here to find out how to put your name on the list.

My husband and I were joined in our trip to Saturday's game by two VI(R)Ps. Our Roaming Penguins sleep in style - this bag keeps them safe from dirt (and dog hair!) when they're not out and about. Sidney Penguin and Mario Penguin hopped out of their shelter, got their tickets, and were ready to hit the road!

Before we left, S.P. and M.P. helped me choose my attire. It was a toss up between my Sidney Crosby Winter Classic jersey and this old school sweater. The Roamers decided that I should go with the sweater, since it is the one I wore to the Winter Classic. It was a good choice - both times I've worn it, the Pens toppled the Sabres, so I guess it worked! (Incidentally, if anyone is interested, they are selling these sweaters at the Mellon Arena again, except the new ones feature the newer scowling skating penguin. They're a bit pricey, though - $120!)

Sidney P. and Mario P. had to sit in the backseat because my husband had already called shotgun. ;)

The Roamers were extremely excited to finally to see the Boys in action! Sidney and Mario were privileged enough to meet Pengylady's Sidney Penguin, but I thought it might cause a rip in the spacetime continuum if there was a photo of two Sidney Penguins. (Okay. Actually, I was so stoked to be at the Mellon and excited to finally meet Pengylady and put a face to the screen name that I completely forgot to set up a photo with our Roamers. I know - it was a great chance and I blew it. I'm sorry.) Here are S.P. and M.P. watching the Pens during the warmup:

S.P. and M.P. forgot to ask me to take their picture at the gate on the way into the game, so we snapped this one on the way out:

The Roamers really liked these spray painted messages on the sidewalk outside the arena:

It truly was...

Several Friends of The Show were at Saturday's game, so I'm not 100% sure which one of them sent me this beautiful shot of the Mellon Arena right after the rain before the game started (LATE EDIT: The sender was identified! It was Pens87Fan71/Lexie101!):

Saturday, of course, was the first game in which the Pens wore their "new" third jerseys. The Roaming group that lives with 1WingAngel and her twin sister Nicole G. got some fancy new duds for the occasion, courtesy of the twins' extremely talented mother:

snoop's Sidney P. and Mario P. are jealous!

Speaking of the twins, the one and only Marc-Andre Fleury actually remembered meeting Marc-Andre Penguin! Friend of The Show Lauren H. shares the story:
I got the chance to meet Marc-Andre today at a promotional appearance he made in Mount Nebo (Pittsburgh suburb) - it was at a phone store and the owner is the guy who my dad gets all his company cell phones from, so we got a bit of VIP access - we got to sort of skip the line and were one of the first people to see him - they kept saying "no posed pictures" but they let it slide with us!

He was so sweet - you could tell he was really overwhelmed when they told him there were a few hundred people standing outside in the cold, all waiting to see him. When he saw my Sidney Penguin, he smiled and said "Hey it's one of those little penguins!" so he definitely remembers meeting his miniature counterpart! Anyways, we couldn't hang around too long (which I was kind of sad about) because my awesome dad also had Steelers tickets for my siblings and I!

We froze our butts off and I think my toes are still thawing out now. When we were walking in, the snow was coming down so hard it looked like a whiteout, but it didn't snow too much throughout the game!

Anyways, Sidney Penguin spent most of the game hiding in the warmth of my jacket, but I was able to snap a couple pictures of him enjoying the game too!

Looks like the Roamers are branching out when it comes to professional sporting events. ;)

Finally tonight, I've got some exciting news about our Sid drawing Friend Jan M. A few weeks ago, she contacted the Mario Lemieux Foundation and offered to donate two of her amazing works for auction. The MLF accepted and Siddo himself signed the drawings! Here's what she had to say about it:
Jode, just be sure you check it out to the bottom because the very first one I did which YOU featured is also up for auction and signed by Sidney! I credit you with all the good vibes you and all of the Friends of the Show gave me. You guys gave me the courage to contact the MLFoundation and ask if they might like to have one. I'll always be grateful!

And yes, Sidney had his grubby little hands on MY drawings! Yee Ha!

Thanks again and again for what you did for me!
Oh, Jan! There's absolutely no need to thank me - YOU are the one with all the talent! You will probably recognize Jan's drawings that now bear number 87's signature (click the picture to go to its NHL auction page):

Sláinte mhaith, to you Friend! The drawings are beautiful. What an accomplishment! :)

Thanks so much to Stephanie, Pens87Fan71/Lexie101, 1WingAngel, Nicole, (their mom, too!), Lauren, and Jan for their contributions to today's post!!

The Roaming Penguins Plan

I want to start with some great news: as of this morning, good Friend of The Show and penguin mama Stephanie S. has reported that sales of the Roaming Penguins have netted $165 (actual cash in hand) for the Mario Lemieux Foundation! There are still more orders, so that number will go up. We'll keep you posted!

So, I left you on Friday with a teaser about big news regarding the Roaming Penguins. I had another unexpectedly busy weekend, so I apologize for not getting to post about it as promised. I was offered a free ticket to the Penn State v Oregon State football game on Saturday. I pass Beaver Stadium on my way to work every day, but in all the years I've lived in this area, I had never been to a PSU game. Let me tell you it was a lot of fun. Despite a recent blow to PSU's defense because of multiple suspensions, Penn State dominated with a 45-14 win. Here's a shot I took of #22 Evan Royster's 28-yard touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter:

What a play! If you don't know much about football, that guy is turning out to be a big deal. In the 2 games played so far this season, he has had 3 TDs in each.

Enough about football! ;) At last, here is the announcement I had planned to make this weekend. Another good Friend of The Show, Daily Su, came up with a simply fantastic idea to create story books using our Roaming Penguins' travels for children in the hospital. After some discussion, here's how we decided we're going to do it: You'll keep taking pictures and sending them in, I'll keep posting them with stories and maps, and Su will copy the pictures and the stories, organize them, and have them printed.

If she can get a lot of books printed, we thought the books would probably have the greatest impact at the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital. We figured since the Penguins themselves do a lot of charity work there (as shown in the majority of today's photos, which came from a visit the Pens made on 01-16-08), the kids would already know and love the Pens.
The kids would get to keep the books and take them home when they get better. Also, if we have extras, we MAY sell them to any Friends who'd like a copy - but we won't know if that will happen until we find out how many copies Su is going to be able to get. (Proceeds of any sales would go to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.)

But in the event she can only get a few printed, we are going to send them to the MLF so they can put them in all the "Austin's Playrooms" where the books would stay. (If you aren't already aware, "Austin's Playroom" is a sort of daycare that hospitals have for the older siblings of sick children and premature babies. When Mario's son Austin was born prematurely, Mario's wife Nathalie had to take their daughters to the hospital a few times because she didn't have a babysitter, but they were too young to be allowed in the NICU, and there wasn't really anywhere for the girls to go while their mom tended to their sick infant brother. That experience inspired the Mario and Nathalie to use some of the money raised by the MLF to fund the construction of these playrooms.)

Mario Lemieux, Nathalie Lemieux, Mr. McFeely from "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," and Children's Home CEO Pam Schanwald cut the ribbon for a new Austin's Playroom on March 15, 2007.

Now your job is to get your Roaming Penguins out there and visiting some unique places. We decided that we'll be accepting pictures until November. I'll post a more concrete deadline as soon as we figure one out. (*** See the Late Edit section below for new due date details. ***) Since the season will be underway, someone out there HAS to get some Roaming Penguins pictures at the Mellon. How awesome would it be to have a shot of Sidney Penguin watching Sidney Crosby on the ice??? Of course, we'd love to see S.P. watching S.C. in other arenas, too (hint, hint!).

Also consider taking the little guy to local landmarks, museums, or parks. Pack him up and take with you on vacation or on business trips. Take lots of pictures and send them in - the more pictures we have, the bigger the book will be. :) Don't worry if you've already sent in some pictures; we'll take as many as you want to send. If you don't yet have a Roaming Penguin, get all the ordering details here. It seems pretty likely that Sidney Penguin's story will be the longest story, but so far we've also got Brooks Penguin, Petr Penguin, and Marc-Andre Penguin making appearances, so feel free to get any Penguin you'd like.

DISCLAIMER - now that you know about our intentions to use your pictures in our book, all Roaming Penguin emails received from this point on will come with the assumption of permission to use your images and/or names. (Your names will appear in the book as they do on The Show, so if you use a screen name, that's what will be in the book. Otherwise it will be your first name and last initial.) For those of you who have already sent a Roaming Penguin story and do not want your photos used, please send me an email to let me know and Su and I will gladly comply.

Hopefully you all are as excited about this new project as we are. And don't forget about our wallpaper project! FYI: I got a couple of requests for the name of font that I used to create TSCS's logo so it can be added to wallpapers. It is called Harting, and it is available for free at Dafont.com. (Don't fret if you've never installed a font on your computer, Dafont provides easy to follow installation instructions for both Windows and Mac OS.)

Stick with TSCS - these last lingering weeks until the season starts can't get boring if we're too busy creating wallpapers and taking pictures in random places! ;)

Now it's time for TSCS's Quote of The Day:
"How many more points would he have had if he stayed reasonably healthy? Four hundred? Five hundred? Six hundred? We'll never know. No disrespect to Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, Bobby Orr, Gilbert Perreault ... but Mario did things nobody else could ever do."

~ Bluejackets' forward and Pittsburgh native R.J. Umberger

LATE EDIT: Based on your feedback in the comments below and several emails, the due date has been pushed back to Friday, January 02, 2009. This will allow plenty of time for Stephanie to make and ship these little guys to everyone who wants to be a part of the book without putting too much stress and pressure on her to get them done in a rush. Plus, I figured it would increase the chances that we'll get a shot of Sidney Penguin hanging out with Sidney Crosby... ;)

Roaming For Mario

After a few weeks of hard work, good Friend of The Show Stephanie S. is ready to release her Roaming Penguins. She has all the details for us in her stint as today's guest blogger:

A million thank yous to Jodie for letting me sell my penguins through The Show! I am so pleased and flattered that there was an interest in my yarn art and am excited to help out a great cause close to any Penguins fan's heart!

Ok, here are the details:

The penguin stands about 7” tall and is about 4” wide. Each penguin will have his number on his back and on his non-stick wing. Captains and Alternates will have the “C” and “A” on the front. All penguins (except Fleury) have a puck attached to their stick. And per Jodie’s brilliant suggestion, Marc-Andre Fleury penguins have wider sticks and a catching glove (with puck in it)! You can order any player/number you want...there are no limits.

The penguins will be $10 each. $5 from each penguin will go to the Mario Lem
ieux Foundation. (The other $5 goes towards supplies and labor. I will not be financing a trip to Europe on my profits or to the other side of Nashville, for that matter!) Shipping will be extra and will be figured on a case-by case basis. Rest assured, I will ship these guys as cheaply as possible!

This is Marc-Andre Penguin. :)

First and foremost, I ask for everyone’s patience as I figure everything out…I’ve never done anything like this before! I have pre-produced some penguins ahead of time, which will help. But please understand that I have a real job, somewhat of a life, and another self-commitment to charity knitting that I do. I will do my best to knock these little guys out…I want to see all the traveling penguins in pictures! But I can make no fast and hard promises to turnaround time. I also ask, for now, that we limit orders to one penguin a piece. I want to make sure everyone gets at least one in a timely matter. I will let you all know when things get manageable for you to order more! Also, obviously, I cannot accommodate rush orders. All orders will be filled in the order in which they are received (I have a lovely spreadsheet all ready to go!)

The ordering process:
  1. E-mail me at StephanieDMB22@yahoo.com, please make the subject line “Roaming Penguin” so I can spot them easily!
[snoop: If you just click her email address, your default email editor will load a blank new message with her address and the subject line already filled in. You can then proceed to step 2.]
  2. Include your full name, address, and player/number you want
  3. I will e-mail you back letting you know I received your order and let you know where you fall on the list. I will TRY to give you at least an estimate as to how long it will be.
  4. When your penguin is finished, I will e-mail you with all the payment details (I’ll be using Paypal), and what your postage will be.
  5. Your penguin will be mailed just as soon as I receive payment.
Please direct ALL questions to me via e-mail! Jodie has very graciously given me a platform to sell my creation, but she has no control over my production pace and can’t tell you where you are now on the list. I will give updates on how much money has been raised and any other general “how things are going” stuff.

A few “fine print” notes. These are not toys. They do have a few pieces glued on and the sticks have wire in them. So please do not give them to small children or dogs. Second, if you are DEATHLY allergic to cats….well, I have one and, try as I might, there will be a few stray hairs on the penguins. (If you have pets, you know the pet hair battle is never ending!)

Thanks again to Jodie for letting me "take over" the site to do this! And please don't tell my Stars I'm doing this....they would be sooooo jealous (this is what they get for not having a mascot!).

No problem, Stephanie! Your secret is safe with us, although who knows who these little guys will meet in their travels once they start roaming... ;)
