"Cup"

Stagerat, Jenn Casey, and Adrienne F. sent in the link to a sweet new commercial starring our title man. The commercial is called simply "Cup." Enjoy:

We never want you in that photo again either, Sid.

Maria T. found this piece on NYTimes.com which describes how Siddo shot the new "Cup" commercial and how the NHL is using The Kid to market the sport.

Retired TSCS founder Jes Golbez found an awesome photo of what may be the funniest sign I have EVER seen at a hockey game (WARNING - Do not view with liquid in your mouth):

Stagerat sent along this article from St. Louis Today that says that the Pens' rise to the top over the past few years is the blueprint for success for any struggling hockey club. (Although, the author isn't so naive to think that having the Saint and Geno wasn't a big part of the Pens' big comeback.)

Lauren H. and Rachel C. sent in articles about the Pens' Swedish scavenger hunt and their tour of the Vasa Museum. (Make sure you keep checking Dan Potash's Swedish photoblog. He's a beast - he's been updating it constantly, and there are new pictures of the scavenger hunt, a hockey game the team watched, and a practice.)

Nikki spotted this street sign in Cape Cod:

71Crush sent in this photo that was featured in The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Stephanie C., her son, her dad, and none other than Roaming Petr Penguin took a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium on September 19th and then to the Pittsburgh Children's Museum on the 20th for her son's fourth birthday. Stephanie's own words introduce each photo below.

1. "Ready to go to the zoo!"

2. "At the zoo's main entrance:"

3. "With the newest elephants, babies Angelina and Zuri. They're a little hard to see in this photo, but it was pretty crowded, so it's the best shot I could get:"

4. and 5. "With his penguin pals!" [snoop: How awesome is it to see a Roaming Penguin with a real penguin?! :)]

"We had a lot of penguins swim up to Petr and give him a good checking out, as photo no. 6. shows:"

7. "In the children's play area, there's this thing, See If You Can Jump As Far As... and then it lists various animals, and how far they can jump. Turns out Petr can jump as far as a penguin!"

8. "A sign in the Children's Museum entrance. Petr says, 'You're welcome!'"

9. and 10. "When Fred Rogers retired, he and WQED donated much of the original Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood stuff to the Children's Museum. Here's Petr with a lovely photo of Mr. Rogers and the show's band, and with the original Make Believe inhabitants!"

11. "Petr trying out the fun pincushion wall:"

Only a few more installments of TSCS's Quote of The Day left in this offseason!
"Any discussion on hockey goaltenders must begin with the assumption that they are about three sandwiches shy of a picnic. I can prove this. From the moment Primitive Man first lurched erect, he and those who came after him survived on the principle that when something hard and potentially painful comes at you at great velocity, you get the hell out of its path. Goalkeepers throw themselves into its path. I rest my case."

~ Jim Taylor, columnist

Thank yous all around to Stagerat, Jenn, Adrienne, Maria, Jes, Lauren, Rachel, Nikki, 71Crush, and Stephanie for their respective contributions to today's post! :)

Pens v Maple Leafs (W 3-2) Exhibition Game

We'll start off with a list of recent Pens news:
  • The Pens faced the Maple Leafs last night in a preseason matchup. Geno led the way to a Pens victory with a goal and an assist. (Pens 3, Leafs 2) Good Friend of The Show Lexie101 was there and was nice enough to share a few of her pictures. By the way, I think she's trying to confuse us - we can now refer to her as "Lexie101 - the Friend formerly known as Pens87Fan71 who was formerly known as Lexie101". Haha, I'm just kidding, girl! You know I ♥ you! ;)

  • Sarge is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder.

  • The Pens trimmed their roster by sending 13 players down to the Baby Pens.

  • And some of you were talking about this article yesterday when I posted the picture of Bugsy in his new uniform: Malone didn't want to leave Pittsburgh.
So I noticed that some of the pictures I posted recently were removed from ImageShack because they exceeded the bandwidth restrictions... I'm looking into solutions for that. I'll be sure to let you know what I come up with...

Now here are some more things that our Friends of The Show have sent in over the past couple of weeks (I'm gradually making my way through, haha!). First up, Friend BackThePuckOff sent in a photo of her dormroom. She said penguins are her favorite animal, which works out pretty well since the Penguins are her favorite team. :) That blue jersey in the middle is for a team in Germany. She hosted an exchange student who later sent the jersey to her for her birthday:

The next photo we have is from Friend Katie G. She is doing an internship in London where she spotted this:

Now we're heading back to Seattle for today's Roaming Penguin story. Recently, Friend of The Show TheNWChica took her friend Max Penguin on a day trip. I'm pretty excited because it marks his first appearance here on TSCS! Here is her account of what they did:

"Here's Max taking a rest on a shelf of my extra bedroom with some of my hockey goodies."

"All strapped in for a day of errands and shopping!" [snoop: See, kids? Even little Penguins need to buckle up!]

"We got hungry, so we stopped for sushi since I know a lot of the Boys love sushi." [snoop: Not to mention it's a real penguin's favorite treat, too!]

"After lunch, we went for a walk in downtown Seattle and he needed a rest, so we stopped next to a newspaper box."

"We would have gone to a Mariners game, but they were out of town, so I just took his picture in front of Safeco Field."

Let's end this post properly - TSCS's Quote of The Day comes from the man himself. Here he talks about what he did on his summer vacation:
"I just stayed on the lake and relaxed, tried not to move much," said Crosby, who's moving quickly now as the Pens prepare for their early season start with a two-game set. "I move a lot during the season. I just enjoyed the chance to stay in one spot."

I totally stole this pic from Jenn Casey's blog, National Passtime.

Many thank yous (← okay, even if you never click the thank you links, you HAVE to click this one) go out to Lexie101, BackThePuckOff, Katie, and TheNWChica for their contributions to today's post. :)

LATE EDIT: It just occurred to me that you all might want access to that "Radioactive Sid" picture that Dave took. Here it is - click to enlarge for a wallpaper sized view:

Catching Up

First things first: Sid is sitting out of tonight's game. There's no need to get too worked up about it. It's probably precautionary and one would hate to risk injury before the regular season even begins. Nevertheless, we'll be keeping an eye on this...

Good Friend and former partner in crime (from my short stint at Taking One For The Team) Loser Chris started The Flower Shop - a blog devoted entirely to our young netminder - earlier this year. Now he's looking for some help with it. If you're interested, find out more about becoming a contributor here.

I need to let you all know that I'm really behind in my emails because of the transition out of my current job into my new job, but please know that I am getting to each and every email sent to me. It just may take me a couple of days to get back to you. I promise I will eventually write back! ;)

As promised, here are some more photos from our Friends of The Show who were lucky enough to get to go to Friday's practice. First up, we've got some great photos from Friend Dave H. Of them he said:
Is it just me, or in #33 (3rd row, 4th picture) does it look like Gill is an adult sitting in on a kids game? That guy is just huge.

#47 (4th row, 1st picture) may be the goal Satan scored on Fleury, you can see the puck right behind MAF's helmet, but #50 (4th row, 2nd picture) is definitely the goal that Malkin scored on Sabourin, you can see the blur going over his glove. [snoop: That is an AMAZING shot, Dave!]

And #39 (4th row, 5th picture) is just an interesting shot of the support pillar for the Igloo, and I threw it in.
Here are Dave's pictures. He included a few more sweet shots of the Igloo. Also, check out how the Saint seems to look radioactive in his practice jersey in the first picture in the third row:

Now we've got a set from Friend Vanessa D. She said this in her email:
My 17 year old daughter took some of these and I took some but she is definitely a better photographer than me.

[snoop: She then responded to my lament that I had spent a LOT of money on Pens tickets this past Saturday.] She is also WAY better than either me or my husband on the computer and she managed to get us tickets to 6 games - all section A... Don’t feel bad about the $$. I guess I’m not going to be getting that new refrigerator any time soon either. Oh well. I guess I can hold out a little longer.
Here are her pictures:

Those were AWESOME!!! My absolute favorite is the giant Hal Gill taping his stick. I love how a man his size can still look like a happy little kid when he gets to play hockey! :)

We've got another installment of Roaming Penguins today. This time, Mario Penguin went on an adventure with Friend of The Show Mer R.:
[Here are photos of] the first adventures of (my) Mario-Penguin. We went to Garibaldi Provincial Park in Squamish BC a couple weekends ago and he took in the spectacular view (and we both got a bit lost in the enormity of it).
Click the pictures to enlarge them so you can see Mario and Mer:

That view is BREATHTAKING. :) If you have Roaming Penguins pictures to contribute, just click the Contact snoop button and send them to me in an email.

And now it's that time again! Here is another TSCS Quote of The Day:
"Hockey is the only job I know where you get paid to have a nap on the day of the game."

~ goaltender Chico Resch

Special thanks go out to Dave, Vanessa (and her daughter!), and Mer for their contributions to today's post. :)
